MARGAO,  SEPT 2
Curtains finally came down on the 11-day Ganesh festivities in the Commercial Capital on Wednesday.
Thousands of citizens bid adieu to Lord Ganesh as the statues of the Lord from the Sarvajanik Mandals at the New Market, police station and BSNL were taken in a huge procession from the city to the River Sal at Khareband for immersion.
Attired in colourful dress and accompanied to the deafening sounds of fire crackers, people from all walks of life participated in the immersion ceremony.
The heart of the city was literally enveloped by a thick blanket of smoke as tones of fire crackers lit all along the 3-km immersion journey. The city was plunged in traffic chaos as the traffic personnel had a harrowing time in regulating free flow of traffic.
While the bazaarkars from the city market led the Lord Ganesh procession from the New Market, police officials and personnel accompanied the Ganesh procession from the Margao Police Station.
The procession wends its way to the immersion spot at Khareband even as heavy downpour in the evenings failed to dampen the festive spirit of the participants.
