PANJIM: Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), on Sunday, said that 116 fish samples collected from various markets across Goa, since July 13, have tested negative for formalin or any other chemical contamination.
After the formalin-laced fish fiasco on July 12, post raid on wholesale fish market in South Goa, the FDA has been conducting regular checks of fish. Government is left red-faced over formalin-fish controversy.
FDA in a report released with regards to the testing of fish samples, has stated that so far 116 samples of different fish including prawns, burante, karbat, etc, were tested randomly in markets of Panjim, Margao, Vasco, Mapusa, Arpora, Bicholim and Ponda and that all the test results showed that there was no contamination.
FDA Director Jyoti Sardesai said that the tests have been conducted since July 13 and so far no fish is found contaminated or tested positive for any chemical. “The tests will continue,” she said.
Goa Government has currently banned fish imports till August 3. With 61-day long fishing ban being in force, there is shortage of fish in the market with prices of local varieties skyrocketing.
