 Assault accused arrest demanded

VASCO: A group of people marched to the police station on Saturday demanding the arrest of the four accused who had assaulted two brothers at Chicalim on Thursday.
According to the police, the wife of Roque Rodrigues, who sells fish at the Vasco fish market led a group of people, including fish vendors and some college students, to the police station to demand the arrest of the four accused, who are still at large. Later, a delegation met the Mormugao DySP Laurence D’Souza and put forth their grievances.
DySP D’Souza later informed the group that the police is still in search of the absconding accused and assured to arrest them at the earliest. Speaking to media persons, the victim, Jose Rodrigues stated that he and his brother, Roque, had returned from a wedding and were outside their house, when one of the accused approached them and started abusing them. Three other accused arrived at the site and assaulted them, Rodrigues added. Rodrigues admitted that there was an ongoing enmity between them and the accused. Sources at the Vasco police station admitted that nabbing the accused in the crime could be delayed as many of its personnel have been deputed for security arrangements of the Lusofonio Games and at the public meeting of BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Sunday.
Woman held with fake currency
PANJIM: The Panjim police have arrested a woman for possessing counterfeit currency notes of Rs 4000, in new Panjim market. Tazmira Sheikh, 30, was caught after two storekeepers’ suspicion was raised as she paid for minor purchases with notes of Rs 1000. She was handed over to the police with the fake notes. Police said that Tazmira, who claims to have come down to Goa from Mumbai in search of a job, had produced a fake Rs 1000 note to a shopkeeper to purchase a comb in the new municipal market. She later walked to another store where she purchased a face mirror by producing another Rs 1000 note. 
“The first store owner suspected foul play and went in search of her. He reached his neighbouring store and alerted his counterpart that the note could be fake. The police who were called in, detected that the notes were not genuine and took her into custody,” said an official. 
The suspect told the police that the notes in Rs 1000 denomination were given to her as salary from her previous boss in Mumbai where she worked. “She quit the job to search another job in Goa. We are probing all the details to ascertain from where she sourced the notes and who else is involved,” he said. The Panjim police have written to its counterpart in Mumbai seeking their assistance to share details about the woman, who is remanded to police custody for interrogation.  
Accused in Nigerian’s murder nabbed
TIVIM: In a swift action, Anjuna police managed to nab Shahish Nagvekar, one of the accused in the Nigerian murder case, who is also accused of a fatally knocking down a 45-year-old man from Siolim on Thursday evening.
The accused had allegedly been identified by locals as the motorcycle rider who had knocked down Shyam Dabolkar (45) at Siolim, before fleeing from the site. Dabolkar died of injuries on Friday morning. All police stations had been alerted to nab the accused motorcycle rider and Anjuna police received a tip off that the accused, Shahish Nagvekar (19) would be sighted near the Siolim church at about 5 pm on Saturday. A police team led by PI Paresh Naik nabbed Nagvekar at the site and later handed him over to Mapusa police. The accused is also wanted in connection with the murder of a Nigerian national at Parra on Oct 30.
Thane student feared drowned
BICHOLIM: A 21-year-old engineering student from Thane-Maharashtra was feared drowned at Harvalem in Sanquelim. According to reports, the incident occurred at about 2.30 pm, when a group of about 20 students from Don Bosco Engineering College from Thane-Maharashtra had arrived in the State for a picnic. The group reportedly went for a swim, when a student, identified as Sanil Stephen (21), disappeared in the water. Fire services and divers from Panjim were rushed to the scene, but were unable to locate Stephen till late night. Sanquelim MLA Dr Pramod Sawant also visited the site to take stock of the situation.
Rs 3.57 lakh burglary at Loliem
CANACONA: Burglars broke into a house at Pedem in Loliem-Canacona and decamped with cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 3.57 lakh. In his complaint, Sydney Coutinho told Canacona police that the incident took place sometime between 4 pm and 6.30 pm on Friday, when burglars entered his house and stole gold ornaments and cash of Rs 2000, all worth Rs 3.57 lakh.The Police has registered the offence under Sections 454, 380 IPC and PSI Arjun Gaonkar is investigating the case.
Briton complains of assault, cheating 
TIVIM: A British national has accused a person from Keri-Pernem of assaulting her, besides duping her of Euros 500 and Rs 1.43 lakh. In her complaint, Melaire Jones who presently resides at Keri-Pernem, told Pernem police that the accused had induced her to invest Euros 550 in his bank account and cash of Rs 1.43 lakh under the pretext of inducting her as Director/Member of his company, which included a café and a hotel, sometime between October 21, 2013 and December 5, 2013. The woman complained that the accused had failed to fulfil his promise and assaulted her when she went to demand her money.  The Pernem Police has registered the offence under Sections 420, 323, 506 (ii) IPC and Pernem PSI V Chodankar is investigating.
Workshop on pithora painting 
PANJIM: Director of Goa State Museums Radha Bhave inaugurated a 5-day workshop on pithora painting and Rajasthani traditional cloth toys workshop at Sanskruti Bhavan, Patto, Panjim, which is organized by the Directorate of Art and Culture in association with West Zone Cultural Center Udaipur. Bhave said the workshop provides a good opportunity for Goans to learn about Pithora painting and craft and Rajasthani traditional cloth toy making. 
Taneraj Soda Programmer Officer, WZCC informed about the history of Pithora painting and Rajasthani cloth toy making. Ram Sawalaji and Ramsing Devraj are the instructors while Harising Rathwa and Ahok Bhatji are the assistants. Ashok Parab Deputy Director, Art and Culture welcomed while Snehal Shetye compered and proposed the vote of thanks.
Sanquelim school tops contest
MAYEM: St John HS Sanquelim won the question contest on the topic ‘Bharat Ko Jane Do’ organized by Progress HS Sanquelim to mark its golden jubilee celebration.
The contest was organised at Dada Borkar hall Sanquelim, in which 11 schools participated. Almeida HS Ponda and L D Samant HS Porvorim won the second and third prizes respectively, while the consolation prize was won by Sanatadurga HS Bicholim and Sharada HS Marcel.
Qawwali prog held at Curchorem
CURCHOREM: Curchorem Ravindra Bhavan organised a programme ‘Mehfil e Qawwali’ at Ravindra Bhavan auditorium, Curchorem. Well-known qawwali singers of India entertained the audience that attended the function.
Azim Naza, son of famous qawwali singer from Mumbai Aziz Naza, Parveen Sultana from Nagpur delivered ‘Sher-Shayari’ based on patriotism. President of Mormugao Islam Jamat, Tahir Dawood Carol, the chief guest appreciated the organisers, Curchorem MLA and chairman of Curchorem Ravindra Bhavan Nilesh Cabral and Vice-Chairman Rajoo Naik were present for the function.
Students urged not to bunk classes  
MAYEM: Sanquelim MLA Dr Pramod Sawant called upon students not to bunk classes and also advised parents not to let the entire burden of their kids on the school management to protect their future.
He was speaking on the occasion of golden jubilee celebration of Government HS Ambegal-Pale. ZP member Laxmikant Parab, Pale Sarpanch Mahesh Gawas, Deputy Director of Education Deelip Bhagat, ADEI Shambhu Fadte and PTA President Tyagi Gawas were present.
On the occasion, five senior teachers including Prabhakar Marathe, Vishwanath Jog, Sulochana Gawas, Prabha Jog and Eknath Gawade were felicitated for rendering good services in the field of education.
Goan school shines at science fair 
MARGAO: S S Angle Higher Secondary School won the ‘Best in Goa’ award in science project at the national-level Western India science fair organized by the National  Council of Educational Research and Training at Nehru Science Centre Worli, Mumbai. Biology teacher Chandralekha Mestri’s learning model on types of joints in the human skeleton using wood and coconut shells received the award at the hands of Prof Jayashree Ramdas, Director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.
Siolim to be venue for RTI?convention
TIVIM: Subhaschandra Sushasan Samiti in association with Goa RTI Forum will organise a mega convention on Right to Information Act at Siolim church hall on January 23.
Addressing a news conference at Mapusa, noted RTI activist Rajan Ghate said the convention will be a day-long affair with discussions taking place around the RTI issue. He January 23 was chosen as the day coincides with the anniversary of Subhash Chandra Bose.
“ Our RTI convention has been fixed on this historical day at Siolim to make people realize the importance of the day and also to make them aware about the use of RTI,” he informed.
Bodgeshwar, Chamundi zatras ahead
TIVIM: The popular zatras of Lord Bodgeshwar at Mapusa and Chamundeshwari at Vargao-Bicholim will be held next week.
On January 13, ‘Sthapana Diwas will be celebrated at Bodgeshwar Temple, Mapusa, while the main zatra celebrations will be from January 14 to 18. After the main zatra on January 14, various groups will perform other religious rituals till January 18.
The other famous Zatra of north Goa is of Chamundeshwari Devi, which will also be held January 14 to 18. But here, the main Zatrotsav celebrations will be on January 16. A There will be ‘nauka vihar’, in which the deity will be taken around by boat to bless her devotees.The celebrations will end on January 18 with a Palkhi and a cultural play by St Andre MLA Vishnu Surya Wagh.
Bandekar excels in international exam
PANJIM: The Mch Ortho  International Examination  Forum  recently declared Dr S M Bandekar, a prominent orthopaedics surgeon of the state presently working in Goa Medical college as having cleared the said examination with merit. The MCh qualification in orthopaedics is considered to be the highest degree in surgical specialities of medicine with international recognition. Dr Bandekar is known for his expertise in joint replacement surgeries  and also many other bone operations at the premier institute of Goa.
Women  taught rangoli art at Mapusa
TIVIM: Stressing the importance of rangoli, secretary of  the Vitthal Rakhumai Temple Tushar Tople said it is an age-old tradition which needs to be preserved as it is being practiced every day in Hindu households.
Tople was speaking at the inauguration of a five-day rangoli teaching camp at Mapusa organized by the Vitthal Rakhumai Temple and Saunskar Bharati, an institution that specializes in imparting the art of rangoli to girls and women.
Tople said the camp has been specially organized to teach women the art of rangoli. About 40 persons participated in the camp conducted by . Mohan Karmekar  of Sanskar Bharati. kar and Sonal Pilarnkar.
Italian certificate course at varsity 
PANJIML The Faculty of Languages and Literature, Goa University, in collaboration with the Italian Embassy Cultural Centre, New Delhi, will conduct an Italian certificate course level II from January  13 till April 16
The classes will be conducted three times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Goa University Campus, Taleigao plateau, art faculty building from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. Kraftwork Nite  to be held a 25th time
PANJIM: Kraftwork Nite  a traditional musical beat show will be held on January 26 from 7pm onwards at St. Augustinho grounds, St. Cruz on the occasion of Republic Day. This is the 25th consecutive year that the  show is being organized by Jose Fernandes in memory of his late brother Anton Joao. 
Goa’s leading bands leading bands– Lace, Brothers-in Arms, Sigmund and the Sunshine Band, I.C.U. (all girls band), New Trinity, Panaji, William Rodrigues (one man band) will perform live. DJ Ryan Nogar will also be in attendance.

Co-optex to promote sale of dhotis
PANJIM: With the aim of  safeguarding traditional Indian wear like dhotis from the onslaught of modern wear like jeans, bermudas etc, the Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society, popularly knowns as Co-optex , has decided to observe the days up to January 14 as dhoti days to promote the sale of dhotis  and provide continuous  employment to the weavers so as to improve their standard of living.
Co-optex , the apex organization of primary weavers’ cooperative societies in Tamil Nadu, is promoting the use of the dhothi as symbol of elegance and pride of Tamil culture and as comfortable apparel. Dhotis of  different qualities will therefore be stocked during this period in various Co-optex showrooms located across Goa.
Lecture series at Gomant Vidya Niketan
PANJIM: The Vichar Vedh Vyakhyanmala annual lecture series of Gomant Vidya Niketan will commence on January 22 and five renowned personalities will deliver lectures on different subjects. Lectures will start daily at 6 pm in the Govind Ramnath Kare Auditorium.
Dr. Prabhakar Deodhar, founder and president of APLAB group of industries and former chairman of Electronics Commission, government of India, will deliver the first lecture , on January 22
The second lecture of the series will be delivered by renowned scientist, Dr. Dattaprasad Dabholkar on January 23. The third lecture will be delivered by Ganesh Matkari, an authority on cinema on January 24 
The fourth lecture, will be delivered by renowned child specialist Dr. Sulabha Brahmanalkar on January 25. 
Suresh Dwadashiwar, editor of Lokmat, a Marathi daily will deliver the last lecture in the series on the following day.
