125 cubic metres sand seized at Camurlim

Seized sand was later dumped back into river with the help of JCB machinery

MAPUSA: In a surprise raid, a team of Bardez Mamlatdar, Joint Mamlatdar, Mines and Geology Department officials and Mapusa Police on Friday seized 125 cubic metres sand at Bharanwada-Camurlim on the riverbank of Chapora River, which was illegally extracted. The seized sand was later dumped back into the river with the help of JCB machinery.

The raiding team consisted of Laxmikant Kurtikar, Joint Mamlatdar Bhiku Gavas, Mines and Geology Department officials Shyam Sawant and Vasant  Karelkar, ASI Suryakant Shetye, Mapusa Police Station; Vivek Korgaonkar and Talathi of Camurlim Village Panchayat. Meanwhile, several activities of illegal sand extraction are noticed on the riverbank of Chapora and Tiracol especially near Camurlim ferry point, Chopdem and Porascadem. These activities are carried out late night and early morning, informed the officials.
