125th tiatr anniversary celebration kicks off in style

MARGAO: The yearlong celebration to mark the 125th anniversary of tiatr kicked off in style with the tiatr fraternity assembling at a glittering function held at the Ravindra Bhavan, Margao on Saturday.

Artistes of current and of the yesteryears descended on Margao to spread the feeling of nostalgia and pride. 
The programme was organised by the Tiatr Academy of Goa in association with the Director of Art and Culture. 
Art & Culture Minister Dayanand Mandrekar, director Prasad Lolienkar, secretary Daulat Hawaldar, TAG president Agostinho Themudo, former president and senior tiatrist Tomazinho Cardozo were present.
This was the inaugural function of the yearlong celebration and various activities will be organized across Goa. The minister announced Rs one for the celebration.
Senior tiatrists C D’Silva, Tony Sax and others were felicitated on the occasion. 
It was on an Easter Sunday (April 17, 1892), the first tiatr performance ever, “Italian Bhurgo”, adapted from the Italian play, was staged at the New Alfred Theatre, Bombay. This day is celebrated as Tiatr Dis (Tiatr Day). Hence, the Goan art form of tiatr was the product of the meeting of Goan culture and the opera of Italy, which incidentally is the birthplace of the opera, and the tiatr was born in Bombay. The tiatr ‘Italian Bhurgo’ was written and directed by Lucasinho Ribeiro from Assagao, who was assisted by Joao Agostinho Fernandes who is called the ‘Father of Tiatr’.
Former president of TAG Tomazinho Cardozo and Dayandand Mandrekar also spoke on the occasion.
