14 beggars rounded up by Calangute police

CALANGUTE: The Calangute police on Saturday undertook a drive against beggars along the coast and nabbed 14 beggars and homeless people, including some women and children. All have been booked and are being produced before competent authority under Beggars Act 1972.

“The menace of beggars is one of the chronic problems plaguing Goa, mostly the coastal belt, where tourists from all over the world come down to experience tourism and the Goa Police are trying their best to curb this menace,” PI Paresh Naik said.

While pointing out that “Goa as a tourist destination attracts tourists from all over the world,” Naik stated, that “while this is true, beggars and the homeless also find Goa a suitable place for their survival and a haven to live which creates nuisance to general public as well as tourists visiting Goa”.

“The police will continue such drives to curb the chronic issue of beggars and the homeless in Calangute,” he said.
