14 die in mishaps in last 15 days

PANJIM: At least 14 persons including a foreign national have lost their lives in accidents across different parts of Goa during the last 15 days. 
As per a report prepared by NGO GOACAN, the total victims comprise of 10 males and four females. 
“The first fortnight of November in Goa has witnessed the tragic deaths of 13 people of all ages some of whom were riders, pillion riders, drivers and pedestrians. 
On Saturday, another rider was killed,” GOACAN Coordinator Roland Martins said on Saturday — eve of The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR). 
Among the total deaths also comprised of three senior citizens, two of whom were pedestrians and one rider. The youngest to lose her life was a six-year-old pillion rider at Dabolim. A Russian national also died in a separate accident at Arambol. 
In the wake of increasing accidents, the forum has urged government agencies, panchayats and municipalities to make efforts to strengthen road safety in Goa by activating the Road Safety and Traffic Management Committees at the grass roots level. 
“GOACAN appeals to citizens, institutions, panchayats, municipal councils, faith-based groups, consumer forums and NGOs among others all over Goa to observe November 17 as WDR and resolve to contribute their efforts to reduce road accidents, related fatalities and injuries,” he added. 
The WDR is commemorated worldwide on the third Sunday of November each year to remember the many millions killed and injured on the world roads, together with their families, friends and many others who are also affected. 
The State has witnessed some of the most horrific accidents in the recent past with the latest being a chain accident involving eight vehicles at Chimbel, leading to the death of a 24-year-old and serious injuries to other occupants of the vehicles.
