A 14-wheeler truck carrying granite lost control and veered off the road along the Mapusa-Siolim road via Housing Board. The incident led to the temporary closure of the road. However, no injuries were reported in the accident. The truck went off the road because it was on a steep path not meant for big trucks.
The driver relied on navigation apps, which directed the vehicle onto the shortest route. This resulted in the truck losing control while negotiating the steep road, ultimately veering off the road.
Local residents emphasized the dangerous nature of this road, especially for heavy vehicles, citing numerous accidents that have tragically claimed lives in the past. “ This road is dangerous especially for heavy vehicles as people’s lives will be at risk. Many accidents have taken place on this road and people have died. This truck shouldn’t have been on this road. I request the RTO to look into this. There should be boards put up informing that heavy vehicles are not allowed, “said Joaquim a resident of Siolim. He further added that the panchayat should write to relevant authorities to prevent large vehicles from entering the road.
The driver, unaware of the road’s unsuitability for larger vehicles, expressed regret, stating, “No one informed me about the restriction. Had I known, I would have chosen an alternate route.”
Highlighting additional safety concerns, the poorly lit condition of the road after dusk was brought to attention, with poles installed but lacking functional street lights.
Authorities responded to the scene to begin efforts to clear the area and remove the truck. As a safety precaution, the Mapusa-Siolim road has been temporarily closed for traffic.
