Vasco: Taking Cognizance of the Herald report on rampant use of plastic bags by the vendors at Saptah Fair venue, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) swung into action and seized over 15 kilos of plastic bags and even fined over 40 vendors in last two days.
According to the Chief Officer MMC Melvyn Vaz, he had issued directions to the Municipal inspectors on Sunday to ensure strict implementation to plastic ban at Saptah venue. “After reading the report published in herald about rampant use of plastic bags by the vendors at Saptah fair, I instructed all the municipal inspectors to form separate teams and visit all the stalls and book the people found using plastic bags and while our staff were on routine check they found several vendors violating the rules laid down by the MMC. Over 15 kilos of plastic bags have been confiscated while over 40 people have been issued fines for using plastic bags despite ban imposed by MMC” Vaz informed herald.
The chief officer admitted that he is now personally monitoring the ban.
