VASCO: A trip to distribute sweets to mark Dussehra festival ended in tragedy when a minor boy was crushed to death by a tanker at Zuarinagar on Friday night. Irate locals later damaged two tankers and one office following the fatal mishap.
The deceased, identified as Nagappa Ramaya Gowdavar (15), a Std 9 student of government school at Zuarinagar, is now the fourth victim of a road mishap within eight days.
According to reports, the incident took place at about 9.20 pm as the tanker carrying sulphuric acid had reached a turn near the police outpost, en route to Zuari Agro Chemicals at Zauarinagar.
Nagappa had gone to distribute sweets on account of Dussehra and was crossing the road, when he was knocked down by the tanker. He died on the spot, while the driver fled from the site.
On hearing the news, a group of irate locals rushed to the spot and damaged two tankers and an office, which is frequented by drivers and cleaners. Verna PSI Bhat is investigating the case.
On Sept 25, Prisca Fernandes was crushed to death under a truck at Canacona, while Sahad Ismail met with a similar fate at Navelim on Sept 30. Hiram Powar was then fatally knocked down by a bus at Vasco on Sept 30.
