Calangute police to get custody of theft accused

MARGAO: Accused Arbaaz Zahiruddin Kahan, 22, hailing from Khargao, Manipur and his associates Rufiyat Alli, hailing from Kyemgiri-Manipur arrested by Margao police on June 12 and presently remanded to judicial custody are to be handed over to Calangute police where they are wanted in a case of housebreaking. The duo along with Khamba, 22, have confessed to being involved in thefts. Margao police have registered offence under section 457, 3280 IPC against the accused. It may be recalled that Margao PI Sudesh Naik on June 12, after receiving reliable information that one Honda Eon car, GA-07-E-6890 was moving in Margao in a suspicious manner, rushed to the area and took into custody one Arbaaz Zahiruddin Kahan. House breaking implements such as a 4-foot-long iron crowbar and screw drivers, plyers along with Acer CPU monitor unit computer, mobiles, Acer laptop, ATM cards, Pan Card, liquor bottles, security personnel uniforms of Hawk Security Service and Security Dilkush Café, all worth around Rs 1.50 lakh and cash of Rs 2,540 were recovered from the car, which the accused had rented from a rental firm in Panjim. After interrogating Arbaz, the police arrested Rufiyat from a city hotel. Margao police sources said some of these items were stolen from Calangute.

Plaint of assault at Margao

MARGAO: Margao police has registered offence under section 324 and 504 IPC against one Suresh, based on a complaint filed by Basil Anthony Baptista, a resident of Mungul, Margao. The complainant who is residing in a colony at Mungul has alleged that the accused Suresh on June 14, at around 4.30 pm came drunk and abused him and assaulted him with a baton (danda) fracturing his left hand. Further investigation is in progress by Margao police.

PANJIM: Norbert’s Fitness Studio (NFS) completed a year in Margao. More than 5000 Madgaonkars benefited from the gym services including sustainable weight loss and body tone as well as weight gain and muscle building. Norbert D’Souza, Propreitor, said that over the year the gym conducted various events, quiz competitions, and endurance challenges in an attempt to educate the members about fitness. A magazine was released on the occasion ‘Diet, Fitness & You.’ Members who excelled at the gym were also felicitated.

Cycling rally on environment held

PANJIM: The Goa State Pollution Control Board, together with Cycling Goa organized a Green Ride to celebrate World Environment Day. This event was supported by Syngenta Santa Monica, Corlim. The event was to create awareness on global warming and the theme was: ‘Raise your Voice not the Sea Level.’ The ride was flagged off at 8 am from Kesarval Motels by Martin Ghosh. More than 125 cyclists commenced from Kesarval, went on to Sancoale, Cortalim and returned to Kesarval ~ a ride of 26 kms. The youngest participant was 8 years old while the oldest was 56 years. The Chairman of GSPCB, Jose Noronha presided over the fellowship function where certificates and mementos were distributed. Medals for various endurance events organized by Cycling Goa under the Audax Club of Paris were distributed. Vote of thanks was proposed by Bryan Soares, President Cycling Goa.

Environment Day celebrated

PANJIM; Resort Dona Sylvia together with Radisson Blu celebrated World Environment Day on June 5 with three major green initiatives including resort cleaning, tree plantation drive and beach clean up. The children of NGO ASRO-Caritas were invited for the tree plantation drive which was initiated by the heads of departments along with their teams. The area immediately outside the resort properties were cleaned in the resort cleaning initiative along with staff and locals. The beach clean up drive included collection of waste along with plastic and glass debris. An effort was also made to remove the tar balls.

Jose Rod death condoled

PANJIM: The tiatr fraternity lost an eminent tiatr personality, Jose Francisco Rodrigues, popularly known as Jose Rod from Parra on June 13. Jose Rod was born on October 1, 1938 and earned fame as an actor, singer, playwright and composer. He acted alongside Valente Mascarenhas, Prem Kumar, SB Radio, Jessie Dias, Thomas Andrade and others. Some of the tiatr he acted in were Bim Toxem Bhat, Thomas Mog Vo Axea, Ekuch Mati, Lagmodi Sun, Vatt Chuklelem Suknnem and others. He leaves behind his wife Angela (Eliza), three sons Braz, Greg and Domnic and two daughters Carmen and Anita. Tiatr Academy of Goa condoles the death of this veteran artiste.

New Khandepar bridge urged

PONDA: Welcoming the State government’s move to construct a third bridge across the Mandovi river, the Ponda Vikas Samithi (PVS) appealed to the government not to ignore the demand for a new bridge at Khandepar in Ponda. PVS President Ram Kuncolkar and Secretary Milind Madgut highlighted the dilapidated, old and narrow Khandepar bridge, constructed during the Portuguese reign and said it could collapse anytime. They said two vehicles cannot pass each other at once on the bridge and said the bridge serves as a major link for interstate transportation of essential commodities from Belgaum to Goa. They said a new bridge has been a long pending demand of the residents.

Submission of assets

PANJIM: All the public functionaries as defined in the Goa Lokayukta Act-2011, are required to file their respective statement of assets and liabilities for the financial year 2013-14 before June 30, in the prescribed format in Form III, provided under the rules, held by him/her or by any person on his/her behalf and members of his/her family in terms of the provisions of sub-section (1) of section 21 of the Act, to the Institution of Goa Lokayukta. Non compliance with the above requirements shall attribute the consequences provided in Sub-Section (2) of Section 21 of the Goa Lokayukta Act, 2011.

Measures ordered to contain soil erosion at Khola

MARGAO: Government authorities, including officials from the Captain of Ports, Water Resources Department and Collectorate reviewed the soil erosion site at Nuem area of Khola village that has threatened to displace residents.

The issue was reviewed at a meeting South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar had with the senior officials in the South Goa District Collectorate on Monday. The officials were directed to devise both short term and long term measures to contain soil erosion at Neum and ensure the safety of the people inhabiting the coastline.

After the meeting, Sawaikar told the media that the authorities have been told to come out with the short term measures within two days so that they are implemented within eight days time. “I had inspected the affected areas of Nuem along with Sanguem MLA Subhash Faldesai and other party workers. The situation is indeed bad. If urgent steps are not taken to contain further damage, the situation may aggravate further,” he said.

When his attention was drawn to the damaged retaining wall at Nuem, Sawaikar said the experts will take a call whether to put boulders or sand bags or any other material to arrest the soil erosion.

“We will get a report within the next 2-3 days. Based on the report, the authorities will initiate the short term measures,” he added.

Items stolen from parked car

MARGAO: Some unknown culprit committed theft of a ladies bag from a Maruti Zen, GA-08-A-5814 and made away with cash and other items totally worth around Rs 62,000. In her complaint to Margao police, Curpician Fernandes, resident of Verna has stated that she parked her car near Grace Church, Margao on June 16, at 6 am and went to attend mass in the church, leaving her hand bag containing two mobiles totally worth Rs 47,000, ATM cards, petrol card and cash of Rs 15,000 in the car and that when she returned after mass, to her shock she found the left glass of front door broken and her handbag missing. Margao police have registered a case of damage and theft under sections 427, 378 IPC and further investigation is being conducted by ASI Khotarkar.
