MARGAO:  South Goa police received additional 175 personnel for patrolling on Tuesday, even as the district Magistrate and the district police chief today reviewed the law and order situation in the district in the wake of the gruesome murder of a senior citizen at Mugalli, Sao Jose de Areal.
At the review meeting, which was attended by Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, it was decided to depute executive magistrates for night patrolling along with the police. Taking into account the shortage of vehicles with the police stations, it was also resolved to hire private vehicles to intensify night patrolling along the villages.
Though district Collector, N D Agrawal denied that the review meeting was not called in the wake of the senior citizen’s murder, he admitted that the cold blooded murder of Satish Kudchadkar did figure at the review meeting. “We have held a similar meeting on the eve of Ganesh Chathurti and today’s meeting has been held in view of the festive season, including Christmas and New Year”, Agrawal said. “We have decided to not only intensify patrolling, but also conduct nakabandis at strategic locations during the festival season”, he said
District police chief Shekhar Prabhudesai said that with the arrival of 175 IRB personnel, the strength of police in the district has gone up to 600. “We are now in a better position to intensify our patrolling. The force will not be concentrated on the beach belt, but in Margao and other villages which requires patrolling”, Prabhudessai added.
Replying to a question, he said the police have decided to crack a whip against landlords and tenants by filing cases against those who have failed to fill up their stranger roll forms. “We have taken serious cognisance of the violation of the Order issued by the district Magistrate on tenant verification”, he said, while warning of action against the violators.
