MARGAO: With beggary thriving in the commercial city of Margao, the 18th June Kranti Din Committee has urged the concerned authorities, including the police and Margao Municipality, to come out with measures to the city rid of beggary menace.
Several beggars have taken refuge behind Kamat Hotel and beside the renovated retaining wall of the historic Lohia Maidan for the last several days.
These beggars at Lohia Maidan are also seen littering all over on the footpath and even drying their clothes on the newly painted retaining wall of the Lohia Maidan. Even as beggary continues to thrive in the city, concerned authorities afailed to draw concrete plan to tackle the beggars menace in Margao city.
It is pertinent to note that Margao police had
registered cases against 112 beggars during 2020 and 2021, while cases of child beggars touched 55 during the same period.
Police are of the opinion that most beggars travel from other states to Goa because it is a tourist destination. They keep on moving from one place to another because they find it easy to make a living by begging.
However, the authorities are yet to set up the detention centre to deal with the increasing numbers of beggars in Margao and its vicinity.
Avinash Shirodkar, President of 18th June Kranti Din Committee told O Heraldo that the organisation is concerned about the mess created by beggars on other side of the Lohia Maidan.
“I had personally informed the police to crack a whip against these beggars who continue to create nuisance in and around the Lohia maidan. It is not that we don’t feel for them, but we have found many beggars involved in creating a mess at important landmarks in the city, like the Lohia Maidan. This being a historical place, the authorities need to act against the beggars,” he demanded.
He said that the Margao Municipality and the District administration should come out with some concrete plans to tackle the issue.
Damodar Shirodkar, Chairperson of Margao Municipal Council said that the council will be reviving the plans pertaining to tackle the beggars menace in the commercial city of Margao.
“We have taken a serious note of the litter caused by the litter at many places caused by increasing
number of beggars. Council will come out with some sought of plans to deal with it,” he assured.
