BICHOLIM: As many as 196 residents of Mayem were on Thursday distributed sanads for their land even as some of them were still not satisfied with the government’s move.
The sanads were distributed by Assembly Speaker Rajesh Patnekar and Mayem MLA Pravin Zantye.
Taking serious note of the Custodian issue, the government notified the Goa (Abolition of Proprietorships, Titles and Grants of Lands) Act, 2014. Earlier, 62 sanads were issued to the villagers.
The Mayem Bhoo Vimochan Nagrik Kruti Samiti (MBVNKS) had repeatedly demanded with the government to speed up the process of issuing sanads to the remaining Mayem residents. In view of this demand, 196 sanads were issued to the residents on Thursday.
While many appreciated the government for issuing the sanads, some expressed dissatisfaction as they were given Class-II sanads and not Class-I, as they had demanded.
“We had demanded Class-I rights and the government has given us Class-II sanads by which we become government tenants,” MBVNKS former president, Kashinath Mayekar said adding “no doubt it is a good move by the government, but the issue should have been resolved once for all.”
“We still appreciate the government for making the Act but taking people into confidence they should have given us Class-I sanad,” Mayekar said and requested the MLA and the Speaker to come up with changes in the Act and provide the residents with Class-I rights.

Sesa workers confront Zantye, Patnekar
The Sesa Goa workers on Thursday gheroed Mayem MLA Pravin Zantye and Assembly Speaker Rajesh Patnekar for failing to help them in getting full salary. The workers were angry that Sesa Goa is paying them only half the salary. Zantye and Patnekar had come to the village for distributing sanads to Mayem residents. Taking the opportunity, the mining workers questioned the duo over the fate of mining in the State. They told the duo that Sesa Goa is paying them only half of their salary which, they said is not sufficient. The Speaker tried to pacify the workers and assured that he would fix a meeting of the agitating workers with the chief minister.
