Officials also say that police inspector in charge of the Calangute police station as well as the head constable have been asked to explain how the incident happened.
Confirming this to Herald, SP (Headquarters) Vishram Borkar said the two hawaldars Pradip Narvekar and Yeshwant Mandrekar have been suspended pending an inquiry into the incident. A departmental enquiry has been initiated against head constable Ashok Gawandi and PSI Mahesh Gadekar. Police Inspector Nilesh Rane, who was having additional charge of Calangute police station has also reportedly received a show cause notice.
John had identified the two hawaldars on Friday afternoon, when three of them were bought to the Porvorim police station and were paraded before Deputy Superintendent of Police Nelson Albuquerque.
John Fernandes, his mother and a group of residents led by Calangute MLA Michael Lobo had called on Superintendent of Police (North) Priyanka Kashyap at Porvorim to enquire about the police department’s action on the shocking incident.
Since Kashyap was not in the office, John and the others met Albuquerque and discussed the issue with him.
John had told reporters that the Calangute police had detained him on the basis of a telephonic complaint, while he was on his way to participate in the Carnival parade.
“I was taken to the police station, where the hawaldars on duty beat me mercilessly in the afternoon. I was detained till late evening,” John said on Friday.
