Pernem: The Pernem locals and motorists were agitated on Wednesday afternoon as the contractor withheld traffic on both sides of NH66 near Redkar hospital to carry a pillar meant for the Mopa link road flyover.

Traffic was paralysed for almost two hours until Pernem MLA Praveen Arlekar reached the site and asked the workers to move the pillar aside.

The contractor had neither given prior notice to the traffic police nor to any other concerned authorities and had taken and arbitrary decision on his own to go about  with his work. The serpentine que of vehicles lined up from Pernem Government College to Redkar Hospital as well as Dhargalim to Redkar Hospital as the pillar was placed horizontally right between the road.

The Pernem MLA was travelling on the same route to Nagzar for a function and reached the site to inquire about the congestion. He discussed with the officials and workers and told them to notify the traffic police in case of such operations and also suggested they carry such work at night. He then asked them to move the pillar to one side so as to ensure smooth flow of the traffic.

Locals, however, were fretting and fuming as they could not reach their destinations on time.
