MAPUSA: It’s not even a week that five tourists met with watery grave off the Calangute beach last Monday. Two more tourists on Sunday drowned in two separate incidents reported at Baga and Sinquerim.
According to sources, in one case, a group of 8 tourists from Mangaluru and Tamil Nadu had come to Baga on Saturday and entered into the Baga Creek for a swim at around 6 pm.
While three of the eight managed to cross the Baga Creek and reach the rocks on the other side, the remaining were trying to cross the creek as three were reportedly clicking pictures. Suddenly, a strong wave swept all the three, pulling them in the under current. Two of them, however, managed to swim to the shore while the third got drowned. His body was washed ashore later.
The deceased has been identified as Dinesh Kumar Ranganathan, (28), a native of Vellore, Tamil Nadu.
In the second incident on Sunday early morning, four tourists from Tamil Nadu had gone to watch the sunrise at around 7 am near Fort Aguada at Siquerim.
In a while, three of them thought of taking pictures and decided to sit on the rocks. As their friend was in the process of clicking their pictures a strong wave came and pulled one of them into the sea.
The deceased has been identified as Sasikumar Vasan, (33), a native of Tamil Nadu.
Both the bodies have been shifted to Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim for post mortem.
Police are investigating further into the case.
It may be recalled that on June 11, 14 tourists from Akola, Maharashtra, had come for a holiday to Goa. On reaching the Margao Railway station around 4.30 am, they hired two taxis and proceeded straight to Calangute and went a swim around 6 am in the sea. According to the police, the tourists had consumed alcohol on their way from Margao.
Five of them were swept into the sea after a huge wave dragged them deeper in the under current. While the locals retrieved three bodies, the bodies of other two were found two days later floating near the rocks at Sinquerim.
