PANJIM: These days, St Andre is in the news, not just for the exploits of its MLA, but also for its dhirios (bull fights). Almost 200 people witnessed a bullfight at Batim on Saturday.
The weekend bull fight was organized by a middleman, with the owner of one bull hailing from Khareband, Margao and the other from Pilar.
It began at about 4:30 pm with owners putting up the winning amount of around Rs 50,000-60,000. There were side bets too.
After about 45 minutes of anticipation, the bullfight began. But the anticlimax came when after less than a minute one of the bulls turned and ran away, with the other bull in hot pursuit. The bull ‘appa’ from Khareband,  won.
MLA Vishnu Wagh has been advocating the legalising of bullfights which have been banned due to cruelty caused to animals. But bullfights continue right under the noses of the police.
