200-yr-old Laximinarayan idol unearthed in Poinguinim

A 200-year-old Laximinarayan idol was unearthed from an abandoned temple of as many or more years at Iddar-Poinguinim on Wednesday.
The idol cleared from the thick bushes and vegetations from within the ruins of a 200-year-old temple, reportedly abandoned over 50 years ago, has ‘Vishnu’ and ‘Laximi’ on a carved stone.
Sources told Herald that locals residing at Iddar and surrounding areas have reportedly decided to reconstruct the temple presently in ruins.
The temple is located in a private land belonging to one Bhat family, who have long back migrated to neighbouring Karwar.
According to sources, the temple is situated in the property belonging to one Bala Anant Bhat, whose family have migrated to Karwar half a centaury ago and since then the temple was lying unutilized and unvisited.
Over the period, the temple gathered weeds and other plantation finally burying it under its own debris hardly known to most of the present generation.
A part of the property was reportedly sold, except for this part of the land, so few locals got enthusiastic as to what lies beneath the thick weeds and unassailable vegetations.
On Wednesday, some residents of Poinguinim got together and employed few labourers to clean the area.
To everyone’s surprise, the Laximinarayan idol was found buried under the debris and vegetation.
Locals finding the importance of the findings have now decided to re-construct the temple, presently in doldrums at the same venue, informed sources.
