The police department is presently equipped with 35 alcometers, and has recently floated a tender for an additional eight and sanction for the purchase of three have been given for South Goa. These figures are paltry.
There were almost 30 lakh tourists who have visited the State in 2013 itself with most going to the coastal belt attracted by the nightlife, and cheap liquor primarily.
Not surprisingly given the very small numbers, after the tender was floated before the Lok Sabha elections but only one bidder showed its interest, the government scrapped the tender to re-float on July 16, 2014. The police also complain about lack of manpower given that there are so many people partying and travelling in the night.
And there are so many other traffic violations to crack down given the increasing vehicle numbers and the high rate of accidents in the State not
connected to drunk driving.
