Decomposed body found at Vagator

CALANGUTE: A highly decomposed body was found floating in the sea at Ozarant-Vagator.

According to Anjuna Police, the body has been preserved in GMC Morgue in Bambolim and PSI V V Pilgaonkar is investigating the case.

Bicholim local found dead

BICHOLIM: A 50-year-old man from Kudchirem-Bicholim, who was reported missing, was found dead in the Bicholim river on Wednesday.

According to police sources, Chandrakant Gaonkar was reported missing since the last two days. Police on Wednesday recovered his body from Bicholim river at Naiginim. PSI Razashad Shaikh is investigating the case.

UK national found dead in resort

MARGAO: A British national was found dead in a room of a resort in Colva. 

He was later identified as Peter Richard Hoad by Geoffry Ware. Colva police registered a case of unnatural death and referred the body for preservation at Hospicio Hospital morgue, Margao. 

Dabal local convicted for assaulting govt servant

SANGUEM: Judicial Magistrate First Class Sanguem convicted a resident of Tamsemoll-Kormonem, Dabal, for assaulting a government servant.

The charge sheet was filed by investigating officer, Mohan Phadnis, attached to Curchorem Police station against the accused, Martin Fernandes, for allegedly assaulting Santosh Naik, an official attached to PWD Department Sanguem.

In the instant case, the prosecution examined seven witnesses including the investigating officer. After going through the evidence led by the prosecution and arguments advanced by APP Coleman Rodrigues, Judicial Magistrate First Class Sanguem Aartikumari Naik convicted the accused for assaulting the official under Sections 353, 504 and 506 (II) of IPC.

Art of Living course

Workshop held on food safety and standards

PANJIM: The Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry organized a workshop and licensing mela at Panjim recently in collaboration with ASSOCHAM and The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to create awareness and capacity building program for Food Business Operators(FBOs).  The workshop was inaugurated by Jyoti Sardesai, Dy Director, Food & Drugs Administration (FDA), who delivered the key note address. Ais Kumar, Deputy Director of FSSAI, Western Region, presided over the function. Joseph D’Souza, Chairman of the Food Processing Committee of GCCI explained the purpose of the workshop and stressed on the need to follow the Act in letter and spirit by the Goan FBOs. Later, presentations on the relevant sections of the Act were conducted by Alexander Benzily of Indian Register Quality Systems, Bangalore which was followed by another presentation by Amol Jagpat, Technical Officer of FSSAI, Western Region. Over 75 FBOs attended.  The workshop was facilitated by Jones Fernandes, Director, GCCI.

Action Day against KKNPP

PANJIM: Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE), a member group of National Fishworkers’ Forum(NFF), a national network of various fish workers’ organisations, during the Annual General Body meeting held recently at Puducherry has decided to hold National Action Day against Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant(KKNPP). A rally will be held from Dona Paula Circle to Raj Bhavan on January 21 at 3.30 pm followed by a memorandum being submitted to the Governor Bhartah Vir Wanchoo.

Retreat at Parra, Chinchinim

PANJIM:  Br Anil of Salvation Ministry will be conducting a prayer meetings on January 21 at Emerald Lawns, Parra and January 26 at Soco’s Farm, Chinchinim, between 10 am to 4 pm.

Khorlim chapel feast

PORVORIM: The feast of St Sebastian Chapel at Khorlim-Mapusa will be celebrated on January 20, with Masses at 7 am and 10 am (feast mass).

Fr Cipriano D’Silva will be the main celebrant. In the evening, a friendly football match between married men and bachelors will be conducted at the chapel ground at 4.30 pm, followed by a magic show by Savio and fire limbo dancers.

Colaco elected chief of  Communidade de Velim

MARGAO:  A new committee has been elected for the Communidade de Velim at the elections held on January 13. The new committee are President Gerson Colaco, Attorney Pracxy Colaco, Treasurer Elvis Conceicao Viegas, sub-president Francisco Pobre Colaco, sub-Attorney Rocha Menino Jesus Colaco and sub-treasurer Garcilio Falcao.

Uniforms distributed at Valpoi

VALPOI: Stating that youth can bring about a change in society, Sattari Urban Cooperative Society, Valpoi, Manager Laxman Gawas stated that their positive thoughts and approach will make a difference to the world.

Laxman was speaking after distributing free uniforms to economically deserving children at a function organised by Phoenix Socio-Cultural Association at Valpoi.

“The social organisation must stress more on carrying out noble activities which will illustrate positive message to others besides, giving benefit to the needy persons,” he said. PSCA President Narhari Shirodkar also spoke on the occasion. On the occasion, five students were distributed free uniforms sponsored by the members of PSCA. Secretary Sayyad Sarfaraz, Imran Shaikh, Abdulla Khan, Jamila Shaik, Suneza Khan, Shaibaz Shaikh, Hanzala Khan, Aftab Shaikh and Shakib Khan were also present on the occasion.

Assagao murder accused still at large

CALANGUTE: Having identified the prime suspect in the murder of the 19-year-old girl at Assagao, the Anjuna Police is now under pressure to nab the culprit.

Police teams have been sent to various places in search of the accused, but they are yet to apprehend him.

Meanwhile, police said the post mortem report has revealed head injuries, while the possibility of rape has been ruled out. However, the viscera has been preserved for further investigation.  

Rape accused file bail plea 

MARGAO: The two accused persons who were arrested by the Quepem police in connection with the rape of a married woman have approached the Sessions Court, South, for bail.

Court sources said the duo filed their bail applications in the Sessions Court on Saturday evening. The bail applications will come up for hearing on Monday evening.

The duo was arrested by Quepem Police on Friday after their anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Sessions Court.

Meanwhile, the Colva police have arrested two persons in connection with the theft of a motorcycle from a parking lot outside a starred resort at Benaulim.

Case against market trader  

MARGAO: Margao police on Saturday registered a case against a market trader under the Copyright Act by selling duplicate Dove soap in the market.

Margao PI Sudesh Naik said the case was registered by the police following a complaint lodged by representatives of Hindustan Lever Ltd today. 

He said the police has also attached boxes of soap, valued around Rs 30,000 in the market. “The complainant has stated that the trader was selling the product in violation of the Copyright Act,” he said, adding that the police are investigating the case.

One held, released on bail for trespass 

BORIM: A man from Codar-Ponda has been arrested on charges of trespassing into Communidade land at Codar. 

In a complaint, Sushant Gaonkar, president of the Codar Communidade, accused one Santosh Gaonkar of trespassing into Communidade property and levelling the land without permission.

Ponda police arrested the accused under Sections 447, 427 of IPC and later released him on bail.

Case registered in kidnap case  

BORIM: Ponda police have registered a case against a native of Bijapur in connection with the kidnap of a minor girl.

According to Ponda Police, the victim’s father had lodged a missing complaint on December 19, 2012, and had said that his daughter was missing from November 30, 2012. A case has been registered under Section 363 of Indian Penal Code and ASI G Nalkar is investigating the case.
