MARGAO: Colva Police on Saturday arrested 22-year-old accused Melbon Rodrigues in connection with the alleged murder of a woman in the age group of 20 to 25 years near a mobile tower at Monte Hill, Benaulim.
According to Colva Police, the victim’s family lodged a missing complaint. PI Melson Colaco received information about a body of a woman lying in the bushes the near mobile tower, at Monte Hill, Benaulim. Accordingly, Colva Police rushed to the spot and recovered the body.
PI Colaco later tried to seek information about the victim from the locals.
Meanwhile, Fatorda PSI Amin Naik informed that a girl from Margao was reported to be missing. He contacted the victim’s relatives with the girl’s photo.
The man, who had filed the missing complaint, identified the victim’s photo as that of his niece, who had gone out with the accused.
Accordingly, the police launched a search operation to nab the accused, who was later arrested. An offence was registered against Melbon, who is learnt to have strangulated the victim with ligature material near the mobile tower at Monte Hill, Benaulim. It is learnt that the accused allegedly killed the victim as he suspected her to be in love with another person.
The Colva Police are investigating the case.
NGO Bailancho Ekvott said, “This is the second murder within a fortnight. Both appear to be cases of one-sided love of men, who refuse to take no for an answer. We fail to understand how one can so cold-bloodedly kill without concern for the human rights of a loved one”.
“Women are still being treated as objects of pleasure. Women are not objects to be owned, possessed or destroyed by anyone. Such men have absolutely no right to take the law in their hands. What’s happening to our community/society/parents,” she asked.
