GMC: 50 MBBS seats to be filled
PANJIM: The Goa Medical College and Hospital has announced that it will fill the remaining 50 seats for its MBBS programme only in the second round, after it secures approval from the Medical Council of India. “In first round of counseling only 100 seats are being offered. The Medical Council of India has conducted inspections of the infrastructure to cater to all the 150 seats and their approval is expected in two or three weeks. As soon as permission is received from MCI to increase the intake to 150, the same will be done in the second round or subsequent round,” the GMC authorities clarified through a statement from the Information and Publicity Department.
Man held with forged passport
VASCO: Vasco police arrested a 35-year-old man from Mangalore on charges of travelling on a forged passport.
According to Vasco police, the immigration officials at Dabolim airport were on a routine immigration check in the wee hours of Saturday when they detained one Pathadkar Mohammed Sahraf, who had travelled to Goa via Sharjah by the Air Arabia flight. Immigration officials found Asharaf had replaced the photo of the original passport holder one Changala Kunni and had affixed his own photo to travel to Goa. Vasco Police arrested Prasad under the Passport Act and Vasco PSI John Fernandes is investigating the case.
Man dies after consuming Ratol
CANACONA: A 59-year-old man from Loliem committed suicide after consuming Ratol on Friday night. Canacona police said Ram Shaba Gaonkar had consumed the poison at his residence at Tansi-Loliem. Police sent the body for an autopsy and later handed it over to the family on Saturday for final rites.
Abandoned baby: No clues on mother
CANACONA: There is no breakthrough in the identification of the mother of the abandoned baby boy rescued from a rivulet at Gulem in Canacona on Friday. Police sources informed that they are still looking out for leads or information to find the person responsible for abandoning the newborn baby.
Youth hangs from ceiling fan
VASCO: A youth from Bihar committed suicide in his brother-in-law’s shop at New Vaddem, here, on Saturday.
According to Vasco police, the deceased, Harendra Kumar Prasad (25), was working at his brother-in-law’s shop at New Vaddem for the last seven years and would spend the night inside the shop.
Scholarships by toddy tappers given
PANJIM: The All Goa Toddy Tappers’ Association has awarded scholarship to Aliston Colaco (SSC) of Guardian Angel High School, Curchorem, Quepem and Felcy M Fernandes (HSSC) of Government Higher Secondary School, Pernem, the top ranking students from the toddy tappers’ community, at a function held on June 22 at Margao office premises.
Anthony Rodrigues (Babush), South Goa Zilla Parishad member was the chief guest and Nicolau Fernandes social worker was the guest of honour. Also present was Gaspar Afonso (President) and Joaquim Piedade Pereira (General Secretary) of All Goa Toddy Tappers’ Association and other executive members and members.
Kendriya Vidyalaya Vasco excels
PANJIM: Kendriya Vidyalaya No I, Vasco secured 100 per cent results in both X and XII CBSE Board exams. 116 candidates appeared and 19 students secured 10 CGPA.
In the AISSCE Kendriya Vidyalaya No I Vasco has made Bangalore region proud by producing outstanding result for the region, by Goa being declared as the State with the highest pass rate. A total of 106 candidates appeared and all passed. 13 students secured above 90 per cent and 75 students secured above 75 per cent. In science stream, of the 81 candidates appeared and Vikas Kashyap secured 95.60 per cent In commerce stream, 25 candidates appeared and Karishma Maria Crystal Mathias secured 90.60 per cent. Principal Roopa Katiyar has congratulated the students.

PANJIM: The Bardez Konkani Asmitai Kendra celebrated ‘Kranti Din’ at Laxmi Narayan Mandir hall at Mapusa on June 18, at which freedom fighter and social worker N B Rao was the chief guest. Rao gave a brief history of the freedom struggle and his role in it. He appealed to all to respect and remember our freedom fighter for their sacrifice.
Gurudas B Natekar was the guest of honour highlighted the role of Dr Ram Mohan Lohia in motivating Goans to fight against Portuguese rule. Earlier, Prof Ravindra Fogueri, President of the association welcomed and garlanded the portrait of Dr Ram Mohan Lohia. Sinny Fernandes and Aparna Belgaonkar were felicitated for scoring highest marks in Konkani at HSSCE and SSCE. Essay contest prizes were also given.
Colonoscopic Polypectomy at AVH
PANJIM: A 60-year-old woman came to the gastroenterology OPD of Apollo Victor Hospitals (AVH) Margao with complaints of passing significant quantity of blood through the stools. After a blood transfusion a colonoscopy was done by Senior Gastroenterologist Dr Jose Filipe Alvares, which revealed a very large Pedunculated Polyp in the Sigmoid Colon.
Dr Alvares advised Colonoscopic Polypectomy, which was successfully carried out. The head of the polyp measured 8 cm and the histopathology report revealed high grade Dysplasia which is a step before becoming cancerous. Polypectomy is the procedure of removing polyps without surgery and this is important to prevent the polyps from growing further and causing cancer.
Courtyard at Old Goa school opened
PANJIM: Celebrating it’s Golden Jubilee year, the Rotary Club of Panaji inaugurated the refurbished courtyard at St Xavier’s Academy, Old Goa on June 21. The project was sponsored by A D Prasad, Director Milroc Good Earth Property Developers. Rotarians Carlito Martins, Subhash Sajane, Andrew D’Souza and Parag Sardesai assisted in the project. Scholarships were awarded to SSC students. Director Caritas, Fr Maverick Fernandes , Principal Sr Monica Coelho, Asst Governor Parag Sardesai, President of club Sayiprakash Raikar and members of the Club were present. An entertainment programme by students followed. The academy provides specialized education to 250 differently abled children.

CABG at Wockhardt Hospital
PANJIM: In a first for Goa, an International Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG) was performed in the State at Wockhardt Hospital. A 76-year-old lady of Bulwayo, Zimbabwe, who had been suffering from angina along with severe coronary artery disease was successfully operated at Wockhardt Hospital. After severe curtailment of her quality of life, the patient was advised to undergo surgery.
She traveled all the way to Goa along with her niece to undergo Coronary artery bypass graft surgery at Goa. Dr Shiromani Goyal (Sr Consultant, Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery) was the surgeon. She has now totally recovered and has no symptoms of angina or breathlessness.
San Joao revelries at Campal
PANJIM: Holy Cross Association at Campal, opposite football ground is organising traditional Sao Joao festival on June 24. Highlights of the festival are a temporary mini swimming pool, continuous artificial rain, singing, dancing and a traditional brass band.
Malim records increased marine catch
PORVORIM: There has been a marginal increase in the marine catch at the Malim Landing Centre during 2012, as compared to the previous year. According to figures by the fisheries department, the marine fish catch reported at Malim was 11,194 tonnes in 2012, while it was 10,905 tonnes in 2011. Sharmila Monteiro said “Overall, the scenario of marine fish production in Goa is, quite good. The Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) has been postulated as 85,000 tonnes, said the director of fisheries.
Cataract surgery camp held at SMRC
VASCO: Mormugao MLA and Power Minister Milind Naik stated that medication and education are the two most important features in one’s life. “Helping a person for his medication or education is a noble cause,” stated Naik, while addressing about 84 cataract patients who were operated by Dr Janki Raman and his team of doctors of Sanhara Eye Hospital, Shigoma, at a free eye cataract surgery camp conducted at Salgaocar Medical Research Center (SMRC), Chicalim. He complimented SMRC and panchayats of Sancoale, Chicalim and Bogmalo for helping in organising the screening camp. Doctors, nurses, marketing personnel and other staff of SMRC and Sankar Eye Hospital were felicitated.
Provedoria lottery results
PANJIM: Tenth fortnightly special lottery draw was held on June 5 and the 1st prize was won by ticket no 35353, Series B for Rs 1,50,000. Director, IPA (Provedoria), Joint Director of Accounts, IPA (Provedoria), Deputy Collector (North), Assistant Director (Lotteries) were present at the draw. At the time of printing, the list was printed with no 35335, Series B instead of printing the prize winning no 35353, Series B. The error remained undetected and when detected about half-an-hour later, the prize list was withdrawn and a fresh prize list was distributed to the agents and vendors the same day.
