25-yr-old brain dead youth gives new lease of life to four people

PANJIM: A 25-yr-old brain dead youth at the Goa Medical College provided a new lease of life to four individuals after his family decided to donate his organs.

The Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim conducted its fourth deceased donor organ donation. A brave decision of a 25-year-old boy family to donate organs gave a new life to four patients awaiting an organ transplant.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, GMC Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar said that the boy was admitted in GMC with severe head injuries due to road traffic accident. Even after receiving the best medical care, his condition deteriorated and was declared brain dead. When approached, the family who are natives of Belagavi, Karnataka showed great courage and took a brave decision of organ donation.

The experts from Brain Stem Death Certification Panel Dr Sanat Bhatkar, Consultant Interventional Neurologist, GMC and Dr Rukma Kolwalkar, General Medicine, GMC performed Brain Stem Death Certification.

The kidneys were allocated as per the waiting list maintained by the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), Goa. One kidney was allocated to a 31-year-old patient at Goa Medical College and one kidney to a 45-year-old patient at Healthway Hospital. 

The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) allocated the heart to a 30-year-old patient at MGM, Chennai and liver to the Army Hospital (Research and Referral), Delhi.

The retrieved organs were transported by 108 Ambulance in the presence of Green Corridor created by the Traffic Cell of Goa Police from the Goa Medical College, Bambolim to the Dabolim airport and to the Healthway Hospital.
