PANJIM: The State Social Welfare Ministry has almost finalized 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in Goa, even as the government denied that this was an election prompted move.
While the statistics on the total OBC population in Goa are being compiled, the survey of the 19 OBC communities has been completed and the rolls will be displayed shortly at the BDO’s office in each taluka.
The lists will be put for scrutiny from September 1to 20 and objections will be invited between September 25 to October 6.
Social Welfare Minister Mahadev Naik said that the OBC Commission will finalise the rolls by October 31, 2013.
The Cabinet would then have the task of giving its consent for the 27 per cent reservation for the OBC community by mid-November.
Those belonging to the OBC community and residing in Goa before 1968 would be entitled to all reservation benefits.
Naik said, “The BJP government during its earlier tenure had proposed to undertake this task, which has been now completed after the BJP came back to power,” Naik said.
He lambasted the Congress government for not doing anything for the OBCs during its five year tenure.
The present government has been under fire for a while on this issue and the Bhandari Samaj have also been demanding for 27 per cent reservation for OBCs.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar explained that the process for completing the survey took a while as during the exercise three communities from the OBC list were given ST status.
Earlier Wednesday the Cabinet gave approval for regularising Class IV staff at GMC, Dental College and IPHB. He said that after many years of service they were discriminated against by the previous government.
The government is not creating new posts but only regularising staff from this segment.
The Cabinet has also cleared posts for Civil Supplies Department for better functioning.
