3 seismographs recommended for Selaulim dam

The Met Department has recommended commissioning of three seismograph gadgets near Selaulim reservoir after the recent minor earthquake in the area.
Indian Metrological Observatory, Goa in-charge K V Singh, said that at least three seismographs should be installed near the reservoir.
“The South district administration has to decide where to install them but it has to be in three different directions,” Singh said.
The recommendation was placed in the recently held meeting with the South Goa district administration, which was also attended by Water Resources Department officials and a representative of Met department.
The meeting was held to take stock of the situation in the backdrop of the minor earthquake in Sanguem earthquake, which was felt on January 6, 2011.
Singh said that the gadgets can be installed either at the Water Resource Department office there or any other area near to the dam.
“We have made the recommendations. The suggestions were placed after going through the detailed report on the earthquake that took place in Sanguem taluka,” he said adding that currently Goa has only one seismograph installed in Panjim.
On January 6, the tremors were felt at about 6.40 am and again at about 11.05 am at Uguem, Valkini and Bhati in Sanguem taluka.
According to residents, the noise and the effect of tremor was particularly high in Uguem and its surroundings, as some people rushed out from their houses.
The Met department had earlier ruled out the occurrence of earthquake stating that they have not recorded any sign of tremors.
However, on January 25, the department confirmed the occurrence of the earthquake following analysis of data sent by Goa station to its Delhi headquarters. The data was collected through Real Time Seismic Monitoring Network (RTSMN). Singh said that the data, which was collected in Panjim was transmitted to Delhi via satellite.
The micro-earthquake measuring 2.2 on the Richter scale was recorded 44 kms away from Panjim. The time of earthquake was 06:54 hours.
