30 trees axed to shift nullah which is in perfect condition

Actual permission given by forest department was for 5 trees only

MARGAO:  In a blatant act of damage to local ecology, more than 30 trees were cut down on Friday to shift the existing nallah behind MCC hall, which is actually in perfectly fine condition. It has been further revealed that the forest department gave permission for axing only five trees.

Taking serious note of the incident, citizens of Margao along with local voluntary organisation ‘Shadow Council for Margao (SCM)’ have strongly condemned the act and demanded inquiry into the matter at the earliest.

SCM alleged that this has been done only to benefit a builder, with the involvement of local MLAs.

Speaking to media, Convener of SCM, Savio Coutinho said on Friday it was noticed that more than 30 trees have been axed, which includes 21 coconut trees, two mango trees, besides teak wood etc.

“Officials from the forest departments inspected the site upon receiving complaint. We got the information that the department had given permission for axing only five trees. It has been revealed that these trees have been cut down only to shift the existing Water Resources Department’s nallah which is in good conditions,” he said.

Savio further alleged that the only reason to shift the existing nallah is to give the land for the development to a private builder.

He said through inquiries he has come to know that a very dubious scheme has been chalked out through the water resources department.

“We will definitely not allow such frauds at the cost of public funds, and shall not shy away from even approaching legal forums to stop such acts,” he informed.

Adv. Seoula Vas came down heavily on the two local MLAs who are in control of the city through the Margao Municipal Council.

Adv. Vas stated that just as the SCM got justice through the Lokayukta when 64 fake work orders were tendered, a similar petition would be filed by the SCM either before the Lokayukta or the Hon’ble High Court as a PIL.

Residents of ward number 20 and Margao strongly criticised the local MLA for such type of development having vested interests, when the city is craving for attention on various civic issues.
