300 road accidents in January this year: Transport Dept

PANJIM: The year 2021 starts with 300 road accidents in January alone according to the monthly statistics compiled by Directorate of Transport.

The statistics recorded that 24 persons were killed in road accidents in January, of which sixteen were reported in South Goa and 8 in North Goa.  Except for one of these from South Goa, the remaining cases were all fatal accidents. 

Of the 24 people who lost their lives, 1 was a cyclist, two were pedestrians, two were pillion riders, two were passengers, while three were drivers and 14 were riders. 

There were also 18 severe accidents of which 11 were from South Goa and 7 from the North District. 

23 people suffered grievous injuries, 16 persons in South Goa and 7 persons in North Goa. 

The department also reported 48 minor accidents, of which 36 were in South Goa and a dozen in the North.  78 persons suffered minor injuries, 58 persons in South Goa and 20 in North Goa. 

There were also 211 non-injury accidents wherein 86 were in South Goa and 125 in North Goa. 

The transport department issued a total of 1,588 challans in the month of January 2021.
