300-year-old cannon recovered from sea

Pulled up onto the fort with the help of a pulley and 10 labourers

MARGAO: The History Lovers Group (HLG), while cleaning the Cabo de Rama Fort, recovered a 300-year-old cannon from the sea.
HLG member Yogesh Nagvenkar informed that they had sent an official request to the Directorate of Archives & Archaeology (DAA) to conduct a cleanliness drive at the fort, and the work began in December.
“A new cannon has been found in the sea. It was almost impossible to pull up onto the fort; it had to be done with the help of a pulley and 10 labourers. Even after 300 years, this canon is rock solid,” said Nagvenkar, who also praised the strong defence architecture and engineering of the fort.
HLG, which had cleaned the Betul Fort early last year, also thanked DAA Superintendent Varad Sabnis and DAA Director Blossom Medeira for their support and taking the initiative to clean up the Cabo de Rama Fort.
It may be noted that the State government is also looking at restoring the fort and the matter was recently discussed at a meeting in the South District Collectorate.
