PANJIM: In all 345 nominations have been filed for the March 22 Zilla Panchayat (ZP) elections, with 168 of them being filed on the last day, Thursday.
Of the 345 candidates, 131 are independents. The elections, which are been fought on party lines, saw BJP fielding 97 candidates, Congress 54, MGP 30, Aam Aadmi Party 21 and Nationalist Congress party 11 (including dummy candidates). A candidature has been also filed by the Rashtriya Samaj Party.
Of the 50 constituencies, 49 will go for polls on March 22, as BJP’s Anita Thorat was the only candidate to file a nomination from Sancoale ZP constituency. She will likely be declared unopposed after scrutiny of nominations. A total of 175 nominations have been filed from North Goa, while 170 are in South Goa.
The maximum number of nominations are in Rivona constituency (14) in the South, that saw BJP’s rebel Bhavesh Jambavlekar filing as an independent. Further, 12 nominations have been filed in Dhargal in the North and 11 each in Mayem and Borim. Ten nominations each have been filed in Morjim and Chimbel.
Scrutiny of applications will take place on Friday, and withdrawals, if any on Saturday.
