PANJIM: The Goa Police on Monday said that it has arrested 37 persons at different locations in Calangute and Anjuna and recovered as many as 90 mobile phones from them.
Addressing a press conference at Panjim, Superintendent of Police (SP), North, Nidhin Valsan said there were three gangs operating in the area.
“We have recovered 90 mobile phones during the last 3-4 days and arrested 37 mobile thieves who had come to Goa with the intention of stealing mobile phones” he said.
The worth of mobile phones stolen in Anjuna would be Rs 25 lakh while value of mobile phones stolen from other places would be around Rs 35 lakh.
The SP North said that Calangute Police Station and Calangute Tourist Police Station arrested 20 persons, who were involved in stealing of mobile phones and recovered 60 mobile phones from them.
SP Valsan said, “During interrogation, we came to know that there were three gangs. One gang is from West Bengal, one from Tamil Nadu and another from Rajasthan-Delhi area.”
The SP said the thieves were arrested based on intelligence. The three gangs were operating independently, he said.
The gangs had come to the State with the specific purpose of targeting tourists and stealing mobile phones from them, SP Valsan added.
