PANJIM: Valpoi village of Sattari taluka, nestled in the Western Ghat region will host the third edition of annual Bird Festival from January 17 to 19, 2020. The village is considered to be a hotspot for more than 255 species of birds.
Birder’s paradise in goa
The Forest Department in association with the Goa Tourism Department and Goa Bird Conservation Network; is holding the festival in a bid to create opportunity to promote Goa as a bird tourism destination. The first edition was held in November 2016, while the second took place in January, this year.
“With a wide array of habitats within its boundaries, the State boasts of over 450 species of birds on its checklist with several rarities and endemics,” the official website mentioned.
Why Valpoi village?
The organizers said that Valpoi is a home for more than 255 bird species, of which 53 shows direct signs of breeding. Some of the major species reported in the area are Nilgiri wood-pigeon, Malabar Parakeet, Malabar grey hornbill, grey-headed bulbul, rufous babbler, white-bellied blue-flycatacher, great pied, Malabar pied, hornbills, forest eagle-owl, etc.
objective of three-day Festival
The basic objective of the event is to focus on putting bird conservation on the centre stage and to raise the attention of nature enthusiasts and general public towards the significance of birds and the important role they play in the ecosystem.
The event will also focus on building initiatives to reduce the impact of climate change on the environment.
During the three-day event, talks by prominent ornithologists from around the globe, workshops by professional photographers, art shows, etc will take place.
Tour for Delegates
The delegates will be taken for bird watching in the Valpoi reserve forests, Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary and Bondla Wildlife sanctuary.
