PONDA: The huge concrete retaining wall constructed four month ago along the service road located by the side of national highway at Kerya collapsed on Friday morning rising doubts in the mind of locals at to its quality.
Commenting on the collapse of the retaining wall, Ponda MLA Ravi Naik alleged that the national highway is substandard. And expressing concern at the safety of road users, he requested the Goa Human Right Commission to take suo motu cognizance of the substandard work and take action.
The MLA also called for an enquiry by the Vigilance Department into the entire highway work.
He said the inquiry of all the works done by NH should be conducted by vigilance department.
“Last year the Kerya road came to focus due to landslide on account of faulty hill cutting. Proper methods are not used for work leading to such incident. Few days ago the newly constructed four lane road was found flooded,” he said.
Khandepar villagers said that around 7 meter long retaining wall collapsed due to which one pipeline supplying water to Usgao was also damaged in the incident. The service road also developed cracks in the incident.
Another local said that a second retaining wall is also leaning towards one side and may collapse at any time. The locals observed that the concrete retaining wall had hardly few steel rods and had no proper foundation.
The locals said that they have already approached the Lokayukth and some are going to file a petition in High Court demanding an inquiry into matter.
