MARGAO, MAY 18
Thieves struck in a big way in Margao, breaking into as many as four shops and business establishments Sunday night.
The incident has raised questions about the efficacy of the Margao police in keeping the thieves at bay despite the police station manned by as many as half-a-dozen young police officers.
While Margao Police confirmed only of the two thefts in the Aquem area of the city, it is learnt that thieves struck at Madel and Shantinagar as well and decamped with goods and cash totally around Rs 1.5 lakh.
Miscreants effected into an IT.Com centre at Aquem and lifted away a laptop, pen drives and cash of Rs 20,000.
A police dog, which was requisitioned by the Margao police could not provide any clue.
The thieves also barged inside another establishment in the same locality and decamped with a CD player.
News of the thefts in a single night sent shock waves in the city, even as the police were quick to state that only case has been reported at the police station.
Incidentally, the Margao police have miserably failed to even detect the number of theft cases in recent times. This despite the fact that the police station has been recently beefed up with Police Sub Inspectors, unlike in the past when the Margao police station had to be content with manpower shortage, especially police officers.
