4 teachers debarred from exam work for controversial English paper

PANJIM: Taking stern action for the controversial content in the Class X English paper, the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) has debarred four teachers from all exam-related work in the future.

The questions in the English paper, which was answered by nearly 19,000 students on May 23, had sparked a major controversy as it had portrayed the government in a poor light with regards to corruption and job opportunities.

The four teachers include three from aided schools and one from a government school.

GBSHSE chairman Ramakrishna Samant said that the four teachers were found guilty by the Inquiry Committee and hence action has been initiated against them. “All the four teachers have been debarred from all exam-related works of the Board, including paper setting and supervision, henceforth,” Samant said.

One of the questions was a conversation between two persons wherein one said that he would opt for a Portuguese passport to get a job as jobs were scarce in Goa, and that one needs to have influence and money to get a job. A question also spoke of corruption in the State.

Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant had taken strong objection to the paper content and had ordered an inquiry under the Education Secretary.
