MAPUSA: Around 40 fishing boats, which were anchored on the bank of River Chapora near Jetty, were successfully saved by the Mapusa fire station personnel while saving a property worth some lakh.
According to sources, on Monday morning when an unknown person set fire to the garbage, which was dumped close to the boats, due to a heavy breeze the fire took a boat under its grip. Immediately Mapusa fire station and Anjuna police were called. The fire team rushed to the spot and saved many boats from getting gutted.
President of the Chapora Fisherman association Balbhim Malvankar said, “Unknown person set fire to the garbage which was dumped close to the boats. The fire reached a fiber boat which was gutted completely. Similarly, 40 more such boats were parked at the site, however before the fire spread further, a team of Mapusa fire station doused the fire completely.”
Malvankar further said, “If the fire was not brought under control then it would have caused losses in lakhs of rupees.”
