There was a mad rush for filing of nominations on Saturday for elections to the 15-member Mapusa Municipal Council, prompting Deputy Collector Dashrath Redker to seek the assistance of the Mapusa to maintain law and order.
In all, 41 nominations were filed on Saturday. Sixteen women candidates have filed nominations for Wards 4, 8, 12 and 14 which are reserved for women.
The seating councillors who filed their nominations were Subhash Narvekar (Ward 2), Ashish Shirodker (Ward 9), Anand Bhaidker (Ward 3).
With this, the total nominations filed till Saturday has gone up to 57.
The candidates of Mapusa Nagrikancho Ekvott (MNE) who have filed their nominations are Jeanette Gomes (Ward 4), Freeda Rodrigues (Ward 6), Samira Swar and Katherina Fernandes (Ward 8), Jacinto D’souza (Ward 3) and Alusio Soares (Ward 15).
Speaking to Herald, MNE Convenor Antonio Lobo said the MNE has decided to field candidates in eight wards only.
“We have taken this decision as we could not find suitable candidates for the seven other wards. Our candidates have filed their nomination in five wards today and nominations will be filed for the remaining three wards on Monday,” said Lobo.
