NERUL: Police protection to the ghumti at Nerul continued on Saturday, with five police personnel posted on hillock after a clash between locals and bouncers on Friday.
Locals said that some villagers have also volunteered to guard the ghumti which was allegedly broken on Wednesday.
The ghumti was rebuilt on Thursday by villagers and the following day there was a clash between locals and alleged bouncers. This ghumti is in the middle of a 1 lakh square metre property.
Nerul Nagrik Kruti Samiti president Gajanan Naik said the ghumti has been existing for over 100 years and during Shravan (currently on) villagers visit it to worship Kalika.
He said the place has religious importance and it is a question of the sentiments of the villagers.
The ghumti on the hillock is accessible by a tarred road till the cemetery, after which there is a mud road. The entire hillock belongs to the comunidade which has a sea view.
People at the ghumti said they will not allow the property on which it stands to be sold, leased or donated to any institute or individual as the villagers treat the hillock as a wall of protection to the village.
