PORVORIM: Acting swiftly, Porvorim Police has arrested five youth from different parts of North Goa in connection with the vandalism at a bar and restaurant in Nerul on Thursday.
Porvorim police managed to get the registration number of one motorcycles used by the accused and identified the vehicle owner, Domnic Nazareth of Merces, from RTO records.
A police team then went to his house at Merces and found out that Nazareth was in Panjim. They waited till he returned to Merces and he was nabbed at about 2 pm.
On interrogation, Nazareth disclosed to Police the names of four accomplices involved in the crime and added that they were to meet him at Bambolim at about 3 pm. The police then laid a trap and arrested the remaining four accused, Umesh Pujari (Merces), Jayesh Chodankar (Siolim), Parimal Pandit (Mapusa) and Rupesh Gadekar (Corlim), at Bambolim.
Police said Nazareth had revealed that 30 persons on 16 motorcyles had barged into the bar and restaurant at Nerul and had damaged the property, after the restaurant owner had denied them entry into his restaurant.
Police added that the CCTVs installed in the premises were not functioning and police had to rely on CCTV footage from adjacent establishments to give them more leads in the case.
“We had leads since Thursday. We have arrested five suspects so far and more arrests are likely,” said North Goa SP Priyanka Kashyap.
The accused have been arrested under Sections 143, 147, 148, 323, 354, 341, 342, 427, 436, 395 r/w 149 IPC and they will be produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class on Saturday for remand.
