Tragedy struck Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday as an avalanche claimed the life of one foreigner, with another still missing. However, five individuals, including one foreigner, were successfully rescued from the snow.
The avalanche, which occurred around 2 pm, engulfed skiers on the Kongdoori slopes. Among those trapped, three were foreigners who had ventured onto the ski slopes without local guidance. Despite the swift response of the District Disaster Management Authority and rescue teams, one person succumbed to the avalanche’s impact, while another sustained injuries. Efforts are ongoing to locate the missing individual.
Military personnel and patrolling teams from the Jammu and Kashmir administration are conducting rigorous rescue and search operations in the affected area.
In a separate incident on Wednesday, an avalanche hit a section of Sonamarg along the Srinagar-Leh road, disrupting the flow of water in the Sindh stream.
These incidents come amidst moderate to heavy snowfall across Kashmir over the past few days, heightening the risk of avalanches in the region’s hilly and mountainous terrain. Further updates on the situation are awaited.
