CANACONA: The Agonda beach of Canacona has witnessed the most visits from the Olive Ridley turtles this year so far, with 50 turtles laying more than 5,000 eggs. Surprisingly, despite being one of the most crowded beaches of South Goa, it attracts a large number of turtles every year.
Last week, five turtles laid 495 eggs and in the last month, a total of 49 turtles have laid eggs at Agonda and Galjibag combined. Two nests have hatched the eggs and the hatchlings have been successfully left into the sea.
Around 36 turtles so far have laid eggs on the crowded Agonda beaches and more turtles are expected in the coming days.
Around 67 hatchlings were left into the sea from the season’s first nesting at Galjibag. The eggs which were soon shifted to Talpona stretch for better safety. Galjibag is the reserved turtle nesting site and is the headquarters of South Goa Marine Zone.
“More turtles are expected in the coming days on Agonda which is a pleasant surprise,” said Sub-divisional Forest Officer Rajesh Naik. While Galjibag’s entire stretch is reserved as turtle nesting site, it’s partially reserved at Agonda.
