50-yr-old hammered to death at Siolim

CALANGUTE: In yet another murder in Bardez taluka, a 50-year-old man from Siolim was reported brutally hammered to death by a local at Dando-Siolim late Saturday night. Five persons have been arrested in this connection.
According to Anjuna Police, Arun Toraskar from Dando-Siolim and secretary of a Devasthan Committee stopped the construction of a shed for ‘Ghumti’ at Dando, which the accused group were reportedly carrying out without informing the Committee at about 3.30 pm on Saturday.
Police said following the incident ~ which led to heated arguments between the two groups, Toraskar filed a complaint at Siolim Outpost at about 4.30 pm. One of the accused, Ashok Salgoankar, later filed a counter complaint at 5.30 pm. Both the parties were asked to settle the dispute amicably.
Police further informed that a reliable source informed the Toraskar group about the plans of the opposite group to hit Toraskar, who runs a shack at Dando-Siolim, on his way back home.
The Toraskar group members informed the Siolim Outpost about the plans and along with Head Constable Nitesh Naik rushed to the site where over 15 people had gathered about 100 metres away from Toraskar’s residence, informed police.
“Efforts to settle the dispute led to an argument and when Toraskar arrived on his motorcycle at the site, he was hit with a hammer from behind by a local,” stated police.
Toraskar was rushed to PHC Siolim, from where he was referred to District Hospital, Mapusa. However, he was declared brought dead at the District Hospital.
Nilesh Pomburpekar later filed a police complaint about the assault on Toraskar by 15-20 people and demanded their immediate arrest.
Sources informed that the members of the Toraskar group have also written to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and the local minister to arrest all the 20 members of the accused group within 24 hours, failing which they will not take possession of the body.
Acting on the complaint, Anjuna Police arrested Ulhas Dabholkar, Ashok Salgaonkar, Subhash Salgaonkar, Shyam Dabolkar and Nanu Salgaonkar in connection with the case. Anjuna Police is investigating.
