502 accidents and 45 deaths in Salcete up to October 2023

MARGAO: Salcete, which is monitored by five police stations, namely Margao, Maina-Curtorim, Cuncolim, Fatorda and Colva; witnessed 502  accidents   including  45 fatalities in the first ten months of the current year.

Maina–Curtorim Police Station registered not only the highest number of accidents but also the most number of fatal accidents this year with the numbers being 168 and 14 respectively.

Cuncolim police station having registered 113 accidents and 12 fatal accidents ranked second while Margao had the least accidents numbering 58 and the least fatal accidents being 3 were registered by Colva police station.

Incidentally, Maina Curtorim police registered the highest number of accidents incolving trucks, cars and two wheelers given the fact that 18 truck, 95 car and 145 two-wheeler accidents were registered by them.

Cuncolim police station registered 10 accidents involving trucks and 68 car accidents while Fatorda police station registered 92 two-wheeler accidents.

In comparison, last year during the same period, 486 accidents were registered in Salcete due to which 53 people lost their lives.

Coincidentally, last year too, Maina Curtorim police station registered the highest number of accidents and fatal accidents with the numbers being 156 and 16 respectively.

Last year Colva police station ranked lowest in accidents as it registered 58 while the least fatal accidents were registered at Fatorda police station where six persons died in an accident.

Salcete police issued 12,863 challans for violations of Motor Vehicles Act as preventive measures to reduce accidents. Once again Maina Curtorim police station ranked at the top having issued 3,443 challans, while Fatorda police having issued 391 challans is ranked lowest.

Coincidentally, last year Fatorda police ranked the lowest having issued only 375 challans, while Cuncolim police station having issued 2,539 challans ranked at the top.

One police officer from Salcete opined that the reduction in fatal accidents this year is due to the increase in issuing challans to people violating the Motor Vehicles Act.

Violations of Motor Vehicle Act are driving under the influence of alcohol, rash and negligent driving, over speeding, driving without license, without seat belt, without helmet, etc.
