532 candidates file papers for five municipal polls

PANJIM: A whopping 532 aspirants have filed their nominations across five municipalities—Margao, Mormugao, Sanguem, Quepem and Mapusa—that are set to go for polls on April 23. 

The Mormugao Municipal Council, with 157 nominations has maximum candidates in the field, followed by 131 in Margao and 122 in Mapusa municipal area. 

For the Quepem municipal council a total of 76 nominations have been received while the Sanguem has got 46 candidates. 

The five municipalities have altogether 93 wards. 

The scrutiny of applications will take place on April 9, while the withdrawal of candidature, if any, will be allowed on April 10.

Also, for the by-elections to the Ward II of Karapur-Sarvan village panchayat in Bicholim taluka, six nominations have been received and ward IV of Veim village panchatyat in Salcete taluka have got four candidates in fray. 

The by-elections are also scheduled on April 23. The counting of all the polls will take place on April 26.
