VALPOI: A total of 55 candidates will contest the Sanquelim Municipal Council (SMC) elections as 21 candidates withdrew their nominations.
Election symbols were allotted to all contestants on Monday and canvassing began on Tuesday. There are 22 female and 33 male candidates in the fray. Nine sitting councillors will re-contest the elections. The Ward 10 has the highest number of nine candidates. While Ward 1 will witness a straight fight between Kunda Madkar and Shilpa Pednekar. The focus is on the two prominent panels headed by the Speaker Pramod Sawant and Dharmesh Sanglani respectively.
Sanquelim locals are annoyed as they allege that many development projects have been left incomplete due to political differences between Sawant and Sanglani.
