600-seat theatre proposed for Margao Ravindra Bhavan

Governing council also wants art gallery, open auditoriumand and multilevel car parking for the cultural centre

MARGAO: Additional infrastructure has been proposed for Margao Ravindra Bhavan after an inspection of the cultural centre by TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai, officials of its governing council and Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC), on Friday.
During the inspection, Ravindra Bhavan officials proposed an art gallery, an open auditorium, a 600-seat theatre, a multilevel car parking and changes to the open stage. And the GSIDC officials estimated that all these proposals would cost at least Rs 70-100 crore and that they would begin the planning process.
Minister Vijai pointed out that Ravindra Bhavan has not been maintained for last 10 years. “Some maintenance was done when the Marine Food Exporters Expo was held, but there is a lot to be done. There is a vigilance enquiry (underway on the affairs of Ravindra Bhavan), hence the work can’t be taken up fully, but we will take up the works which are beyond the purview of the enquiry,” Vijai said.
The minister informed that the planning for a 600-seat theatre has been initiated in view of the burgeoning Konkani cinema that has been demanding theatre screens which “the big names don’t provide.” “This theatre will get the much needed screen for the Konkani cinema,” he said.
Vijai also informed that he and other officials met and discussed with the chief minister about the vigilance matter of Ravindra Bhavan and the chief minister has extended help to get the work going.
