CANACONA: A speeding heavy vehicle on the National Highway 66 along the Parrikar bypass at Canacona ran into seven buffaloes that were squatting there killing them on the spot on Thursday night. The incident is believed to have occurred after 9 pm on Thursday night and on Friday morning, the Canacona Municipal Council lifted the carcasses from the road and buried them.
No one has claimed the ownership of the dead buffaloes and police too have not registered any case as yet. “We are waiting for the owner to come forward and lodge a complaint,” said police.
Buffaloes usually graze in the nearby fields and rest on the road at nights and given their dark colour, it is difficult to spot them especially when the roads are not illuminated.
The number of cattle deaths on this road are on the rise as locals say that farmers often let loose their animals to fend for themselves who often land on the roads and get killed by vehicles.
