CHINCHINIM: Seven cars were gutted in a major fire reported in a garage, at Dandevaddo, Chinchinim in the wee hours of Sunday.
Some vehicles were inside the garage when the fire broke out at around 4 am.
After receiving information about the fire incident, the Fire Department officials immediately rushed to the site and managed to douse the fire. The total loss has been estimated to be over Rs 6 lakh. The firemen said they managed to save property worth Rs 30 lakh.
Garage owner Shaukat Ali informed Herald that “the fire occurred early Sunday morning around 4.30 am. A passerby who goes to sell fish at the wholesale fish market near the Margao KTC bus stand observed this fire and immediately intimated the Goa Fire and Emergency Services and Goa Police. By that time, our workers sleeping in the rear room of an auto workshop awoke and rushed to the garage. The blaze was extinguished by a single fire tender deployed by the Fire Department around 6 am.”
“Five cars were totally gutted and two cars were partially damaged in the fire. Since two vehicles were over 15 years old. Besides, a Swift and Beat (2010 model), there were three vehicles of 2010-11 model so the loss has been estimated to be over Rs 6 lakh. Though we had removed the batteries of some vehicles, the batteries of the vehicles bought on Friday were not removed,” divulged Ali, when inquired regarding the probable cause of the fire.
