VASCO: Due to low pressure area over equatorial Indian Ocean seven fishing trawlers from Kerala rushed to Vasco bay seeking safe shelter.
The seven trawlers had 58 crew members altogether and they were returning back to their home after carrying out fishing at deep sea.
According to the information, the low pressure area in Comorine region has now intensified into well marked Low Pressure Area. Low pressure is seen over equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining Comorine area, south of Sri Lanka and Southwest of the Bay of Bengal. An advisory have been issued by the Coast Guard for fishing vessels, not to venture into the affected areas. As a result, few of the fishing trawlers were left stranded off the coast with no possibility of returning back to their home for the next 72 hours hence they requested for shelter at Mormugao Port.
Soon after MPT received information, port authorities accepted the request and accommodated the fishermen to anchor their trawlers at Vasco bay. Also following directions from MPT Chairman I Jeyakumar the port authorities took prompt action and instructed Capt Manoj Joshi, Dy Conservator/MPT to contact affected fishermen and help them in every possible manner.
In response, Mormugao Port Trust welfare team has provided meals to the affected fishermen.
