MERCES: At least seven kiosks near the Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim were removed on Friday on directives of Tiswadi Mamlatdar Madhu Narvekar, after they were set up without licence.
Narvekar told Herald that authorities have identified some kiosks that were set up and operating without licence, while the structures of others had been illegally extended.
Asked if the owners of the kiosks were served notices, Narvekar replied in the negative. “There is no need to serve notices as the kiosks have come up illegally. The area comes under my jurisdiction and I have every right to remove any illegal structure,” he said.
When told that several other illegal businesses are conducted around the GMC complex, Narvekar replied: “I am in the process of identifying these businesses and action will be taken in the coming days.”
However, some kiosk owners have expressed displeasure over the sudden action, claiming that they were not given an opportunity to defend their structures.
“Notices should have been served on us before taking action,” insisted a kiosk owner who said that he possessed a licence from the Communidade to operate a moveable kiosk.
When questioned why he had set up an immoveable structure when he did not have permission to do so, he said that he had done so since most of the other kiosk owners had also built such structures.
A team from the Agassaim police station was present at the site to prevent any untoward incident during the demolition drive.
